Clara Hill / artists (C)
Profile: Clara started to discover the power of voice in the eighties, when she was singing alongside some tunes by Madonna. She noticed, that her voice would gain in volume and character, the more often she sang. At a certain point it was clear to her that she wanted to join and front a band. Aged seventeen, she founded the acid jazz combo Superjuice, together with her friend Funès. In the early nineties, at the height of acid jazz, the band toured through Berlin clubs, gathering a high-profile reputation. During these years, Clara made her first steps in live music. During one of her shows, she met DJ Alex Barck from Jazzanova, who was spinning records as a support DJ. In 1998 he introduced her to the producers of Extended Spirit (2/6 of Jazzanova): Stefan Leisering and Axel Reinemer, that produced a few tracks with Clara. Relaxed and easy, a friendship started with Stefan Leisering and Clara Hill. With him, the song "No Use" was composed which later appeared on the Jazzanova album.
In the meantime Clara sang in another band: Stereoton. A band that was rooted in hip hop but played with jazz elements. A group that was fitting perfectly for Clara expanding her vocal skills to new levels. With Stereoton, a 12" on Sonar Kollektiv was recorded and eventually an enduring cooperation with Jazzanova emerged, for which Clara contributed a song for the "In Between" album. Looking back, working with Jazzanova, a dream became true. Besides Jazzanova, Clara Hill though also was working with Berlin based singer Georg Levin. On his hit (I Got) Somebody New, that was remixed by Masters Of Work, her voice can be heard alongside Georg Levin.
To record a solo album, was one of Clara's first goals. She wrote a few songs but then asked herself with whom she could record. Who could translate her musical ideas? She chose those with whom she had already worked earlier. Five tracks from "Restless Times" were produced and arranged with three friends (i.e. Funès, with whom she already produced the house track Don't Hesitate). The remaining seven tunes of the album were recorded with Stefan Leisering and Axel Reinemer from Jazzanova.

Jazzanova - The Remixes 2002-2005
Ou enfin Let It Go, à la montée puissamment irrésistible.

After "Remixes 1997-2000", the album "In Between","In Between Remixed" and "Mixing" Jazzanova now come up with Remixes 2002-2005, a compilation of released, unreleased and brand new remixes. Its always been a priority for Jazzanova to produce remixes. Back then, the six DJ/Producers from Berlin created a buzz with their remixes. Nowadays, the focus is on their own compositions and projects and their collaborations with artists from the Sonar Kollektiv community as well as Worldwide DJ-tours and the expansion of their Sonar Kollektiv label.
Jazzanova created a classical soul feeling for Heavy’s "Wonderlove (For Minnie)". They took up the challenge to arrange the strings and horns, recording them with live musicians in their Berlin studio in order to combine them with their renound precise programming. The result is a mesmerizing uptempo soul tune , while the Original is a beautiful ballad.
It was also a privilege and honour for Jazzanova to be able to remix Masters at Work feat. Roy Ayers ! For "Our Time Is Coming" they fuse broken beats with a house feeling to create a spirit that captures the typical 70ies vibe of Roy Ayers but still has that Jazzanova twist.
Jazzanova are continually looking for new music and taking ideas from their DJ sets and from one idea they combined the acapella of Status IV with an afro beat, which then lead into a remix only for their own DJ sets. Due to the positive reaction from audiences in clubs around the world and a powerplay by Peter Kruder, the original 'mash-up' is now the first 12" single from this album (SK087).
Jazzanova always liked and respected Shaun Escoffery as an artist and singer and they were delighted to remix Shaun Escoffery's "Let It Go", In this remix Shaun's gospel feeling is melted into Jazzanova's view of early 90ies house music. Together with Shaun Escoffery they also produced another song, "Boom Clicky Boom Clack", which soon will be re-released on Sonar Kollektiv (alongside a Mr. Scruff remix!). Watch out!
The story behind the remix for Eddie Gale is similar to Status IV. Jazzanova had their eyes on an acapella part of his "Song Of Will" for quite some time, before Blue Note / EMI called the guys up for a remix. That made it pretty easy for Jazzanova to choose one artist to remix from the huge Blue Note catalogue as they had also already had the idea for this remix in mind. They produced a deep, hiphop influenced hypnotic remix.
Hypnotic and driving also describes their remix for Marcos Valle’s "Besteiras do Amor". Naturally it was a big honour to remix such a 'brazilian-hero'. The result is once more surprising: an energetic combination of the original's fragile brazil moments with epic string chords and sounds from Detroit.
One could always hear and find Folk, Rock and Indie influences in Jazzanova's productions, DJ-sets and, of course, on their compilations Secret Love (SK042CD/LP, SK066CD/LP).
So for their remix for Calexico, Jazzanova had the possibility to choose their favourite song of the "Feast Of Wire" album. The choice was "Black Heart". The original's dark mood, led Jazzanova on a peculiar path for their remix: dubby elements, noise and slow-motion beats mixed with string parts and the voice of Joey Burns.
For the remix of Nuspirit Helsinki's "Honest“, the soulful vocals of Nicole Willis were underlaid with a challenging broken beat. The hook of chords, bass, athmos, strings, the boogie feeling and more ingredients were the musical basis for the remix, and after several sketches and drafts they released this groove monster which is still being played by DJ’s worldwide (SK023).
Like Status IV the next track is also exclusive and previously unreleased. Several years ago Jazzanova discovered the music of Free Design. Many titles by this 70ies vocal ensemble are favourites of Jazzanova and they have collected all of the bands records through the years. Jazzanova were so inspired by the pure acapella of "Lullaby", originally a good night song for children, that they decided to do this very special remix.
Fat Freddys Drop, the marvellous soul / reggae band from New Zealand (released on SK072CD/LP), is one of Jazzanovas’ favourite artists. Their remix for "Flashback" has just been completed and therefore it is not on this promo cd. But we can give away, that Jazzanova orientated their remix on the structure of the original. They have adapted the bass line and other elements to a kind of boogie tune with dub influences, certainly satisfying both, freestylers and house-music-lovers. In the middle of their remix is a little surprise part with extra vocals of Fat Freddys Drop singer Joe Dukie.
The release "Jazzanova Remixes 2002-2005" comes alongside a blank, but designed cd-r. Either for back-up or for a copy to friends, everybody can use this blank disc as he chooses to. Jazzanova created a special DJ mix, exclusively downloadable on www.jazzanova.net.

Ever since CLARA HILL caught VIKTER DUPLAIX´s voice on the subliminal Messages she had the secret wish to collaborate with him one day. After witnessing her beautiful voice on various productions by exceptional artists such as JAZZANOVA, ATJAZZ, SANDBOY and in partnership with GEORG LEVIN (WAHOO) on the subliminal (I Got) Somebody New it was only a matter of time until CLARA and VIKTER could both add their soft and deep voices to one tune together. As the connection to Mr. DUPLAIX was already established through his collaborations with JAZZANOVA and the time was ripe for Clara’s second album she reinforced the contact and got in touch with him. By the time Vikter made his way over to Berlin he had already prepared two songs of which one ended up to become Paper Chase. The lyrics about wasting no time in order to be with one another as much as possible were written by both of them while recording in the studios of JAZZANOVA ROSKOW KRETSCHMANN and VOLKER MEITZ. Soon after, Vikter arranged and finished the song back in LA and sent it off to legendary KEVIN “KD” DAVIS for the final mixdown. The simplistic beat pattern swings it´s way along the main saw tooth and atmospheric background synths which leave enough room for the vocals to breathe the centre of the tune.
CHRISTIAN SCHELLMANN aka FUNÉS and FLORIAN ZINCK form the duo and have been in touch with CLARA HILL for a long time through a private and musical friendship. Back in the days Christian released the song Don´t Hesitate with the help of Clara´s vocals on DIXON´s Recreation imprint whereas all three were involved in the band STEREOTON with which they already had 3 releases on Sonar Kollektiv. Florian and Christian were part of the production team for Clara´s last longplayer Restless Times (SK009CD/LP) and since then re-established their musical partnership to form SPLEEN. Currently they are working on their debut album in a Berlin Kreuzberg studio. Their remix relaxes Paper Chase down to hip-hop tempo and gives it a contemporary r´n´b feel without losing the essential deepness of the original.

On Friday 24th November Native are proud to be putting on a one-off night with a very special guest all the way from Germany. This will be an evening of jazz inflected grooves of only the very highest standard in the company of the very respected JAZZANOVA.
Jazzanova are, undoubtedly, one of the most important dance/electronic projects of the last ten years. They, along with record label Compost, set the template for most of the black music rooted dance/electronica that has been made over the past couple of years. They were also one of the first projects to bring some world music awareness to dance music, bringing in elements of Latin and African music and, in the process, showing that dance music itself is something that has almost existed since the dawn of times. But, in truth, Jazzanova are a very eclectic bunch, and they are as capable of making Latin-influenced jams, as well as very electronic-sounding 4/4 house joints. All in all, Jazzanova prove that knowing your music (and especially, knowing it in very different styles) can be important by the time you create your own thing.
And, of course, let's not forget that Jazzanova, along with Kruder & Dorfmeister, also brought the art of remixing to a new and refreshing stage. In many cases, their remixes are so much that as almost new creations in themselves, sometimes completely turning the original tunes upside down. In some cases, that approach can even turn what was originally dull and turn it into a dancefloor stomper or a great chill-out vibe. In short: Jazzanova is an essential name for anyone who likes music. Any kind of music, really.
